By now you probably got the blurb of last week’s Microsoft announcements:

The first step in your cross-platform journey is to install Visual Studio 2019 for Windows or Visual Studio 2019 for Mac. When installing Visual Studio 2019 on Windows all you need to do is select the Mobile development with.NET workload: On Visual Studio 2019 for Mac you can select to install Android and iOS. Visual Studio support Visual Studio 2019 (v16.8) Visual Studio 2019 for Mac (v8.8) Included in Visual Studio 16.8.4 Included runtimes.NET Runtime 5.0.2 ASP.NET Core Runtime 5.0.2.NET Desktop Runtime 5.0.2 Language support C# 9.0 F# 5.0 Visual Basic 15.9. This release focuses on improving the quality in Visual Studio for Mac through bug fixes, performance improvements, and reliability improvements. Visual Studio 2017 for Mac version 7.8 Preview 3 (7.7.0.1607) released February 6, 2019.

Now we have two Visual Studio versions (Visual Studio for Mac, Visual Studio Code) that can directly install on the Mac (macOS), refer to your description, it looks like you installed the Visual Studio for Mac, it is a developer environment optimized for building mobile and cloud apps with Xamarin and.NET.
- Generate template file Right-click the project you want to turn into a template and click Create Template. That will create a folder called.template.config and add a file called template.json to it. The folder is not being added to the project, but exist on disk in the root of the project directory.
As a testament of our close collaboration with Microsoft, we shipped same-day support for Android Native C++ projects in VS 2015, as well as deep integration with Microsoft’s Hyper-V based Android Emulator.
The experience basically is that now in VS 2015 you have two new templates for Android and iOS:
Visual Studio 2019 For Mac
Launching any of those two templates will create a project that is like an introduction to the product and links to download it (similar to what the Azure templates do when you don’t have Azure SDK installed):
Now you can just click that download button, and get the new integration for 2015!
If you happened to have a previous version of Xamarin for Visual Studio installed, please keep reading as you may not have gotten the 2015 bits installed by default (it’s something we’re fixing shortly).
Ensuring 2015 support is installed (only for previous Xamarin users)
By default, Windows Installer will just update the components you have previously installed, when applying an update. Since you previously didn’t have 2015 components installed, then by default you won’t be getting them installed right now. (we’re fixing that soon-ish).
Don’t worry, you don’t have to go download anything again, here are the easy steps to ensure you turn the bits on for 2015:
1 - Go to Add/Remove programs and search for Xamarin:
2 - Click Next on the installer window and select Change on the next screen:
3 - Finally, make sure you check and install locally the Visual Studio 2015 feature:
After the installer is done applying your changes, the old “starter” templates will be gone and you’ll be greeted with a bunch of template that you’re surely familiar with already (since this section applies to existing users only ;)).

This week, James is joined once again by friend of the show Dan Siegel, Microsoft MVP, who shows off his latest creation, Prism Template Studio & Developer Toolkit for Visual Studio for Mac. This toolkit has great quick-start templates when using Prim for applications, but also has a bunch of great developer productivity features such as connecting to App Center and easily adding NuGet packages when creating a project.
