FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – One glance at the walls of Donald “Mac” McAlister's man cave uncovers dozens of stories.
A shelf contains figurines of the members of KISS and Metallica. Horror movie memorabilia lines one wall, including a signed picture of makeup artist Tom Savini, whose credits include the Friday the 13th series.
Look across the room and you will see a legacy of a quarter century of military service, much of it in the 82nd Airborne Division. There is the sign from his desk when he was battalion command sergeant major. There is a group photo of Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment. A shelf is covered in challenge coins, including one from Medal of Honor recipient Col. Walter Marm.
“This is basically an old guy's Fortress of Solitude,” McAlister says.
McAlister retired after 25 years of service that included combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. He opened a store in Fayetteville. It did not prosper, and the COVID-19 pandemic finished it off.
“Instead of realizing, hey, it was going to happen regardless, I kind of used that as an excuse to tuck away in a bottle,” he says. “I got mad one day and just started getting back at it. I was like 'Hey, you know what, you've been through a lot worse, so let's get back to what we need to be doing.'”
Meanwhile, he watched with growing alarm as some of his Army buddies killed themselves. The tipping point came in the late spring, when a friend who had become a role model to younger soldiers ended his own life. McAlister took his frustrations to social media. In a video he posted on Facebook, he asked former senior enlisted personnel in particular, “What are we doing to take care of ourselves?”
“My writer/actor/director friend, he saw it, called me to make sure I was OK, and then he was like, Mac, you need to be out there talking to these guys,” he says.
The result was Mac's Man Cave. McAlister recorded the first episode of the podcast in August. In each episode, Mac talks to one or two guests about their lives and the ups and downs they have faced. Although the podcast originated from issues veterans face, McAlister says he wants to reach civilians as well. The fifth episode featured brothers Adrian and Ryan Patrick from the rock band Otherwise.
“There's truly not enough people who have been through a lot that are willing and able to actually be transparent and talk about these things,” he says. “It's all about not just surviving, but living.”
McAlister says he has gotten a lot of feedback from listeners either asking for advice or thanking him for helping to put things in perspective.
“I had one kid that basically wrote me a book and told me, 'I've been in the Army 10 years or whatever, and nobody's ever put it that way,'” he says.
McAlister does the podcast on the side. He currently doesn't have a regular release schedule and plans to keep it that way for now. He says he would rather do an episode whenever he feels the time is right.
“I want it to be something that somebody, I don’t even have to know, but somebody gets something out of it. Maybe it will save their life, or maybe it will, like that one kid that asked a question, maybe it’ll get them to go get help, and that’s what it’s about.”
